The relays were their usual heart stopping excitement.
I'll start with senior boys: The commentator got a little lost so we weren't sure if Gene was first or second through the check points. Matt O had a good run and we think Duncan went out in first place or maybe second. He disappeared for a long time between the first and second spectator controls and when he came out to the second sc he was in third place. He made an awesome run in the last 1km loop and came up the finish shoot just behind the first Aussie, first second and third were only seconds apart.
Then it was announced oz had mispunched which put Duncan in first place. It turned out the Duncan and the Queensland (I think) guy went to the same control, Dunc then checked and saw after punching that they were at the wrong control and went off to find the correct one. The Queensland guy didn't realise and that is when he overtook Dunc and mispunched.
Junior boys. Liam ran first. He was first runner out of everyone to the first sc. Right behind him was Nick who was running composite team. They were together still at the second sc then Nick overtook Liam on the final 1km loop, they finished within seconds of each other. I haven't heard how Tim found the map today, his was the slowest time of the four kiwi junior boys but he had a pretty clean run with no large errors like the ones on the previous two days., so he may have just been going carefully. BJ had a great run and the team won by a country mile.
Senior girls. Laura was first up and came through the first and second sc's just behind the OZ girl then there was a huge huge gap to the next runner which happened to be Jamie, who was running solo. At the second sc Laura was 18seconds down but in the final loop managed to cut that down to about 2 seconds and ran up the finish shoot right on the tail of the oz girl. the ground was very lumpy and not easy running but Laura was closing the gap. Selena ran second and had overtaken the oz team by sc control one, I think the gap had grown at sc two and she was two or three minutes up but then we had the pain of watching her take an unusual route choice and run off way below the control. She managed to hold the lead and Angela took off 55 seconds in front of the oz team. At sc one Angela had gained 3 minutes on the girl who she had lost to/or won to by 1 second the day before. We were all expecting a tight race but Angela extended the lead and was about 4 mins ahead at the finish.
Junior girls. Holly didn't have a good run and came in around 6th or 7th. Hannah ran well and pulled them up to 5th then Lauren gained again and they surprised us as the team ended up third. So all up the trophy comes home again. I think Hamish said we won by 20 or 30 points.
They have their social tonight. The theme being 'mis', I'll leave the kids to fill you in on that.
The afternoon event was fun and interesting. It was a score event but the score you had to get was predetermined and no extra points for getting more controls. Sarah, Jamie B_W and Ed all stuffed up their maths. James won his grade, Jula got a second again today, Tessa and Rita had good runs and I think Ali did too. At prize giving there were more NZ'ers than OZ. Hamish did well too.
